Florida Democrat Files for Re-Election Days Before Resigning Amid Ethics Probe

In a move that raises more than a few eyebrows, Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick filed paperwork for re-election just days before stepping down from office as pressure mounted from a House Ethics Committee investigation.

On April 17, Cherfilus-McCormick officially submitted her candidacy to the Florida Department of State—only to resign from Congress less than a week later. Timing like that tends to get people talking, and not in a good way.

Her resignation came just ahead of a scheduled recommendation from the House Ethics Committee that she be punished over allegations tied to mishandling disaster relief funds. According to the committee’s findings, she was cited for 18 campaign finance violations, five instances of false financial disclosures, three counts of misusing official funds, and one count of lack of candor. That’s quite a list for someone who had just decided to run again.

The allegations claim that disaster relief money was funneled through multiple companies into her campaign accounts for personal political gain. Serious accusations, especially when they involve funds meant to help people in times of crisis.

Despite the findings, Cherfilus-McCormick has maintained her innocence. In a press release, she argued that the process was unfair, stating that the Ethics Committee denied her new attorney adequate time to prepare a defense. She said she could not allow her due process rights to be “trampled” or her reputation to be damaged.

Her office has not responded to requests for further comment.

In the end, this situation highlights ongoing concerns about accountability and transparency in government—issues voters across the country are watching closely. And while the investigation continues, one thing is clear: Americans expect their leaders to handle public trust—and public funds—with integrity.
