A man described by federal officials as a four-time deported illegal alien has been arrested in New York City after allegedly shoving two people—including an elderly veteran—onto subway tracks in a violent incident that has once again raised serious questions about immigration enforcement and public safety.
Authorities say the suspect, Bairon Posada-Hernandez, a 34-year-old national of Honduras, was taken into custody following the attack. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that an immigration detainer has been issued to ensure the suspect is transferred to federal custody.
According to DHS officials, Posada-Hernandez had already been deported four separate times, raising immediate concerns about how someone with such a record was able to return and remain in the country.
“Bairon Posada-Hernandez is a serial criminal and four-time deported illegal alien from Honduras who should never have been able to walk our streets and harm innocent Americans,” said DHS Deputy Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis.
Federal officials also urged local leaders to cooperate with immigration authorities and honor the detainer issued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, warning against releasing the suspect back into the community.
“We are praying for the victims and their families,” Bis said. “DHS is calling upon New York sanctuary politicians to commit to this ICE detainer and not release this heinous criminal back into New York communities.”
Court records from the New York State Unified Court System confirm that Posada-Hernandez was arrested Tuesday. According to reports, he was later charged with first-degree assault, while some sources say prosecutors are also pursuing attempted murder charges.
The New York Police Department released images of the suspect and details about the attack while seeking public assistance during the investigation. According to authorities, the suspect allegedly pushed a 30-year-old man onto the subway tracks before approaching a second victim.
That second victim was 83-year-old Air Force veteran Richard Williams, who was reportedly shoved from behind onto the tracks.
Williams suffered multiple fractures and bleeding on the brain and is now fighting for his life in a hospital, according to local reports.
His granddaughter, Samantha Loria, described the heartbreaking reality her family is facing.
“The hardest part is I can’t have a conversation or hug him again,” she said. “Any time I visit him, we walk around. We would go to Manhattan. He would always say hi to everyone and ask how they’re doing. It doesn’t hurt anything to be kind.”
Another victim, Jhon Rodriguez, told reporters he saw the moment Williams’ head struck the tracks before the veteran began bleeding and eventually lost consciousness.
The shocking incident has intensified concerns over crime and immigration enforcement policies in major American cities. Critics argue that repeat offenders who have already been deported multiple times should never have the opportunity to re-enter and commit additional crimes.
As the investigation continues, federal officials say they are determined to ensure the suspect remains in custody and faces the consequences for the alleged attack.
For many Americans watching this story unfold, the hope now is simple: justice for the victims, recovery for a wounded veteran, and stronger policies that prevent tragedies like this from happening again. ??
