Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has issued potent new directives, unleashing the National Guard’s full tactical capabilities, including military vehicles, dozens of patrol cars, and boat assets, to bolster law enforcement operations across Washington, D.C. This decisive move reinforces President Donald Trump’s unwavering commitment to restore order in a city long plagued by rampant crime.
The War Department confirmed the new guidance, issued on October 29, aimed at strengthening National Guard patrols. This authorization comes as the Trump administration’s deployment of thousands of National Guard members, part of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, continues to face predictable legal challenges from those who seem more interested in political obstruction than public safety.
“The Secretary of War has authorized the continued use of National Guard personnel and capabilities in support of the Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission,” a War Department official told The Epoch Times on November 6. “The October 29, 2026, guidance authorizes the use of up to 60 marked patrol cars, military tactical vehicles, up to 20 light towers and generators, and D.C. National Guard maritime boat assets in support of federal and local law enforcement operations.”
President Trump initially deployed the National Guard to Washington in August 2025, declaring that the city was “under siege from violent crime” and rightly pointing out that Washington’s local government had “lost control of public order and safety.” The Guard’s deployment is now expected to continue through the remainder of the president’s term, a testament to the ongoing need for decisive action.
This steadfast commitment to law and order has yielded tangible results. Secretary Hegseth previously credited National Guard members for a “staggering” crime drop in Washington. Metropolitan Police Department crime statistics from January 1 to November 6 reveal significant improvements: homicides have plummeted by 26 percent, motor vehicle thefts are down by a remarkable 40 percent, property crimes have decreased by 14 percent, and robberies by 2 percent compared with the same period last year. While total crime is down 11 percent, some challenges remain, with assaults with a dangerous weapon increasing by 39 percent and total violent crime by 12 percent. Yet, the overall trend clearly indicates the positive impact of a strong, visible presence.
Unsurprisingly, the president’s robust deployment of the National Guard has been met with vocal criticism and legal pushback from Democrats. In November 2025, Judge Jia Cobb of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia attempted to rule against Trump’s National Guard deployment, claiming he overstepped his authority. Fortunately, the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit swiftly paused that ruling, ensuring that these vital troops could remain in Washington while the case is litigated—a crucial victory for common sense.
A three-judge appeals panel heard arguments on October 14, where U.S. government attorney Eric McArthur powerfully asserted Trump’s authority to deploy the National Guard under the 1889 D.C. Militia Code. McArthur underscored the deployment’s “striking success, with even the D.C. mayor acknowledging the dramatic decrease in violent crime since the deployments began.” Meanwhile, D.C. attorney Mitchell Reich offered the standard, tired argument that the president’s authority is limited, a position seemingly detached from the reality of surging crime that necessitated intervention.
Adding to the chorus of opposition, Democratic D.C. council member Brooke Pinto, chair of the public safety committee, called on newly elected Democratic lawmakers to recall National Guard troops from Washington following the midterm elections. Pinto ludicrously described the deployment as an “unnecessary, harmful, and unlawful military presence,” ignoring the very crime statistics that show a city being made safer. She even urged Democratic governors-elect in Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas to withdraw their National Guard troops immediately after taking office, putting political posturing above the lives and safety of D.C. residents.
This administration, under President Trump’s leadership, understands that public safety is not a partisan issue. While the left continues to play political games, the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, now reinforced by Secretary Hegseth’s directive, stands as a clear signal: the America First movement will always prioritize law and order, ensuring that our nation’s capital, and every American city, is a place of safety and freedom, not a playground for chaos and crime.
