Indicted Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Faces Rare House Ethics Hearing

Embattled Florida Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick is set to appear before a rare public ethics hearing that could ultimately lead to her expulsion from the U.S. House of Representatives — a dramatic development for a sitting member already facing serious criminal charges.

The hearing, scheduled before the House Ethics Committee, comes alongside a separate federal indictment accusing Cherfilus-McCormick of misusing more than $5 million in disaster relief funds. Prosecutors allege the money was diverted to finance her 2021 congressional campaign and purchase luxury items, including a large diamond ring.

Allegations and Charges

According to federal prosecutors, a company linked to Cherfilus-McCormick — Trinity Health Care Services — received approximately $5 million in overpayments connected to a COVID-19 vaccine contract funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Instead of returning the funds, authorities claim the money was routed through multiple bank accounts to conceal its origin.

The indictment also includes allegations that she:

  • Participated in a straw donor scheme
  • Conspired to file a false federal tax return
  • Laundered funds to support her campaign

If convicted on all counts, she could face decades in prison.

Legal and Political Pressure

Cherfilus-McCormick has pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing. She has also sought to delay the ethics hearing, citing the ongoing criminal case and the loss of her legal representation earlier this month. It remains unclear whether she will appear with counsel.

In a public statement, she criticized the decision to move forward with the hearing, arguing that it could compromise her due process rights. She also said she intends to challenge the allegations when legally able to do so.

Possible Consequences

The ethics panel has outlined 27 alleged violations expected to be addressed during the hearing. Depending on the outcome, potential consequences range from reprimand to expulsion — one of the most serious actions Congress can take against a sitting member.

Despite calls to resign, Cherfilus-McCormick has declined to step down, setting the stage for what could become one of the more consequential ethics proceedings in recent years.
