Iran Hails the "Capture" of a US Underwater Drone as a Major Victory ... Even Though it Had Been Broken and Drifting for More Than a Day

Pure PR from the losing side.

Iranian state media and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have flooded the airwaves with triumphant claims that they “trapped one of the most modern, intelligent and unmanned submarines of the terrorist American army” at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. They describe the Dive-LD (built by Anduril) as equipped with “the latest technologies” and present photos and video of the recovered vehicle as proof of a sophisticated intelligence and operational success — clear evidence, in their narrative, that they are “winning.”

The facts, according to the Pentagon and U.S. Central Command, tell a very different story:

A Pentagon spokesperson told Reuters the drone had been surveying regional waters when it “malfunctioned more than a day ago.”

“The defective drone was an older model that neither collected sensitive data nor carried any classified sonar or radar equipment,” the spokesperson said.

CENTCOM spokesman Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins added that the drone was “essentially dead in the water for more than a day” before Iran announced its so-called seizure. U.S. operations in the area continue uninterrupted.

Anduril confirmed the loss of one Dive-LD but stressed that the system is designed as an “attritable autonomous system,” meaning it is built from the outset to operate in dangerous environments where losing a vehicle is an “expected possibility.”

In short: Iran did not intercept a cutting-edge intelligence platform in the middle of a high-value mission. It recovered an older, defective vehicle that had already failed and been drifting for over 24 hours, carrying no sensitive data or classified sensors. Tehran is inflating this into a propaganda triumph to project strength and convince audiences that it is “winning” — while the U.S. account makes clear how limited the actual “success” really was.

Classic media effort: magnify a minor recovery into a narrative of superiority. Poor losers. Expect local losers -AKA democrats, and other leftists- to replicate this fake news.
