Israel Acknowledges Strike on Lebanon Convent, Cites Hezbollah Activity

JERUSALEM—The Israel Defense Forces confirmed this weekend that it carried out an operation targeting a convent compound in southern Lebanon, stating that the site had been used by Hezbollah to launch attacks against Israel.
The acknowledgment follows reports that Israeli forces had “bulldozed” the convent—claims the IDF pushed back on—while maintaining that the structure lacked clear religious markings and was being used for hostile activity. According to local accounts, the convent had not been fully operational for some time due to evacuations amid escalating conflict in the region.
The strike comes in the broader context of Israel’s ongoing military campaign in southern Lebanon, which began in mid-March in response to renewed attacks by Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group. Those attacks followed a wider Israeli-American campaign targeting Iranian leadership that began on February 28.
Israeli officials have argued that Hezbollah’s deep entrenchment in civilian areas across southern Lebanon has complicated military operations, prompting a strategy similar to previous actions in Gaza—focused on creating buffer zones to limit the group’s ability to operate near Israel’s borders.
The situation has placed additional strain on local communities, including Lebanese Christians living in the south. Israeli forces have urged evacuations in several مناطق, though some residents have refused to leave, stating they are not involved in the conflict. Reports indicate that at least one priest has been killed during ongoing military activity.
Adding to the controversy, the Vatican’s newspaper L’Osservatore Romano reported that Israeli bulldozers destroyed the Holy Savior Christian School in the village of Yaroun, which also served as living quarters for nuns and supported educational efforts in the area.
The incident underscores the growing complexity of the conflict, where military objectives and civilian realities increasingly overlap. As tensions persist, international attention remains focused on how operations are conducted and their broader impact on communities caught in the crossfire.
Despite the escalation, the situation continues to highlight the difficult balance between security concerns and humanitarian considerations—an ongoing challenge in modern conflict zones.
