Israeli Open Letter Criticizes Trump Over Iran Memorandum

A public disagreement emerged this week from a corner few expected, as an Israeli newspaper closely tied to longtime supporters of President Donald Trump published a sharply critical open letter regarding the administration’s agreement on a memorandum of understanding with Iran.

The letter appeared Thursday in Israel Hayom, the Israeli newspaper founded by the late Sheldon Adelson and currently owned by his widow, billionaire philanthropist and major Trump supporter Miriam Adelson.

Under the headline, “You could have been the greatest president of all, but you failed,” veteran Israeli journalist Danny Zaken argued that Trump’s agreement represented a departure from a strategy that, in his view, had weakened Iran and brought the region closer to long-term security.

The criticism centered on the belief that maintaining pressure had produced results and that changing course risked slowing that momentum. As often happens in politics, supporters can agree on the destination while debating the route — and they usually do it with headlines large enough for everyone to notice.

At the same time, the reaction reflects the expectations placed on Trump by allies and supporters who have long viewed his foreign policy approach as unusually assertive in the region.

Disagreements among allies are nothing new, especially when the stakes involve security and international strategy. But strong reactions also reflect how significant Trump’s decisions continue to be on the global stage and how closely they are watched by both supporters and critics alike.
