James Carville Says Democrat James Talarico Must Address Past Controversial Statements to Stay Competitive

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville says Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico will need to confront several controversial statements from his past if he hopes to remain competitive in his race against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

During Wednesday’s episode of the Politics War Room podcast, Carville expressed optimism about Talarico’s chances but acknowledged that the candidate faces significant political challenges stemming from previous remarks that have already become targets for Republican attacks.

“I think Talarico has better than a shot,” Carville said during the discussion.

Co-host Al Hunt agreed that Talarico should take an aggressive approach to the campaign, noting that Republican advertisements are already highlighting some of the candidate’s past comments. Hunt argued that the issue cannot simply be ignored.

“The GOP is already airing an ad accusing him of saying all kinds of weird things,” Hunt said.

Carville responded bluntly, stating, “Some of it is true, and he’s gotta deal with it.”

The conversation then turned to several statements attributed to Talarico that have generated controversy. According to reports, the Democratic candidate has expressed support for “trans children,” suggested that God is “non-binary,” and argued that modern science recognizes six sexes.

Talarico has also faced criticism for comments regarding abortion. He recently stated that the Bible is “silent on abortion,” a position that has drawn sharp criticism from religious leaders and conservative activists.

Among the most vocal critics was evangelist Franklin Graham, who rejected Talarico’s interpretation of scripture and argued that the Bible clearly affirms the value of unborn life. Graham cited biblical passages and accused the candidate of misleading voters about Christian teachings on abortion.

Additional scrutiny has centered on Talarico’s use of the phrase “neighbors with a uterus” when discussing women, a choice of language that has sparked debate among both conservatives and some political commentators.

The growing attention surrounding these remarks highlights the challenges candidates face when past statements become central issues in a statewide campaign. In modern politics, almost every comment eventually finds its way back into the spotlight—especially when an election is on the line.

As the Texas Senate race intensifies, both parties are expected to focus heavily on Talarico’s record and public statements. Whether voters view those comments as disqualifying or simply part of a broader political debate could play a major role in determining the outcome of one of the state’s most closely watched contests.
