The Trump administration is preparing a significant overhaul of visa processing operations across Africa, a move aimed at strengthening security screening and aligning immigration resources with American priorities.
According to reports, the U.S. Department of State intends to reduce the number of African embassies and consulates authorized to process visa applications from 50 locations to approximately 20 regional hubs. These centers would handle applications from Africans seeking to visit or migrate to the United States.
The plan was reportedly discussed during a conference call involving U.S. diplomats and staff stationed throughout Africa. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously signaled the change through a directive approved last week, outlining the transition toward a more centralized visa processing system.
The proposal is part of the administration’s broader effort to tighten visa policies and reduce the number of migrants entering the United States. Officials argue that concentrating resources into fewer locations will improve efficiency while maintaining rigorous screening and vetting standards.
The State Department emphasized that the changes are intended to ensure taxpayer resources are used effectively and that visa operations remain aligned with America’s national interests. The department also stressed the importance of maintaining strong security procedures throughout the application process.
The administration has already implemented other visa-related measures affecting parts of Africa, including restrictions involving certain regions and increased financial requirements for some applicants. Additional limitations have also been connected to areas impacted by ongoing Ebola outbreaks.
Importantly, the reported changes do not appear to involve closing the remaining embassies and consulates. Instead, many of those facilities would continue operating while offering a more limited range of services related to visa processing.
Supporters of the plan view it as another step toward a more controlled and security-focused immigration system, while officials maintain that the objective is to ensure resources are directed where they can be used most effectively.
