Jim Jordan Slams Jack Smith's Alleged Snooping

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, sharply criticized former Special Counsel Jack Smith on Wednesday, calling reports that Smith’s team improperly accessed materials related to President Trump a serious breach of separation of powers.

Jordan stated that if the allegations are true, Smith’s actions represent “a total separation of powers issue.” He emphasized that the executive branch, through the Department of Justice, cannot weaponize its authority against a sitting or former president in this manner without violating constitutional boundaries.

The controversy stems from claims that Smith’s team continued investigative actions or accessed sensitive information even after key developments in Trump’s legal cases. Jordan has been leading aggressive congressional oversight into what he and other Republicans describe as the weaponization of the Justice Department against Trump and his allies during and after the 2024 campaign.

This latest revelation adds fuel to long-standing conservative accusations that Smith’s appointments and investigations were politically motivated from the start. Jordan and House Republicans have repeatedly argued that Smith operated with little oversight and pushed boundaries that threatened the constitutional balance between branches of government.

The comments come as the Trump administration continues to push for accountability regarding past DOJ actions, with several former officials still under scrutiny. Jordan made clear that Congress will continue its investigations to ensure such alleged abuses are not repeated.
