In a powerful and urgent speech to the nation on Thursday night, President Donald Trump highlighted his administration’s strong economic achievements and warned that America faces a severe threat to its democracy due to foreign interference and domestic corruption in the electoral system.
Trump began by summarizing key successes, stating that America is back with major gains across multiple economic sectors. He then delivered a stark message on election integrity:
“No country can be great without fair elections. Every American deserves to know that their votes will be counted.”
The President announced the declassification of long-suppressed intelligence reports revealing extensive Chinese interference in the 2020 election and beyond. According to the documents, China stole, bought, or hacked 220 million voter files from at least 18 states and even assigned a specialized unit for the operation. Trump accused elements of the “Deep State” within U.S. intelligence agencies of deliberately downplaying the threat, withholding critical information from presidential briefings, and destroying documents (though some surviving records were recovered).
He also revealed that China began efforts in mid-2018 to sabotage his first administration by supporting anti-Trump initiatives and trying to influence election outcomes. Other irregularities mentioned included "shocking" vulnerable voting machines susceptible to foreign attacks (similar to tactics used by Maduro in Venezuela), suspicious “Get on the Vote” operations in Michigan involving gift cards and irregular Social Security number use, and the discovery of approximately 278,000 illegal foreigners registered to vote. Trump criticized the Biden DOJ for shutting down related investigations.
Trump directly attacked the left-wing media, accusing them of being complicit in the cover-up. He claimed that journalists were paid to relentlessly speak worse about him and to create the false narrative that he lacked broad public support.
The President stressed that this massive cover-up has done enormous damage to the country and cannot continue. He emphasized that fair elections are not a partisan issue — Republicans, Democrats, and Independents all deserve secure and honest elections. He announced that his administration will work directly with affected states, and that Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin will brief senators and the public on electronic vulnerabilities in the system.
Trump made a forceful push for the immediate passage of the SAVE America Act, which includes proof of citizenship to register, strict photo ID requirements, and severe restrictions on mail-in ballots (with exceptions only for military, disabled, and verified absentee cases). He questioned why Senate Republicans have not yet passed it, suggesting some prefer to keep the system vulnerable to cheating.
In a direct call to action, Trump urged Americans: “Call your senators!” and pass the SAVE ACT.
The speech, which NBC notably chose not to cover live, represents one of the most significant public declassifications regarding threats to U.S. elections. The Trump administration intends to move aggressively to fix these vulnerabilities before the November 2026 midterms.
