In a glaring display of the radical ideologies now vying for power within the Democratic Party, a Michigan congressional candidate has repeatedly attacked America's foundational "cult of hard work" and baselessly smeared Republicans as an alliance between "fossil fuel billionaires" and "white supremacists." William Lawrence, a self-described Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) member, is currently competing in a hotly contested primary for Michigan's 7th Congressional District, a seat crucial to the battle for control of Congress.
Lawrence, who co-founded the far-left Sunrise Movement, made these incendiary remarks across multiple appearances on left-wing podcasts and radio programs, exposing a worldview deeply at odds with the values held by most working Americans.
On one episode of his podcast, "Hegemonicon," Lawrence lamented what he described as uniquely American problems facing the political Left, specifically citing "U.S. exceptionalism, the cult of hard work." For those who believe in effort, self-reliance, and contributing to society, such a characterization is nothing short of an insult to the American spirit.
But Lawrence didn't stop there. He went on to advocate for a legislative takeover by his ideological comrades, arguing the Left needs to elect more openly socialist lawmakers, and explicitly calling for additional DSA members in Congress. "I think sometimes we want to talk about accountability, as if it's simply a moral calculation, where we need more accountable working class and progressive or Left legislator[s] -- we need more accountable DSA members in Congress," Lawrence stated. He believes these socialist lawmakers would need "a lot of reinforcements" to protect them from "the political establishment" after taking controversial votes.
Perhaps most shockingly, Lawrence unleashed a sweeping, unhinged attack on the Republican Party during a 2018 appearance on the radio program Rising Up With Sonali. "I said it before. The Republican Party is an organized alliance between fossil fuel billionaires like the Koch brothers and white supremacists like Steve Bannon and Ron DeSantis," Lawrence declared. He continued, claiming Republicans "do not care one bit for the idea of democracy, and they are actively dismantling every piece of our civil liberties and our freedoms that we have fought and people have died for over the course of this country's history." This is the kind of incendiary rhetoric that shows a complete disregard for facts and a willingness to demonize political opponents with baseless accusations.
Lawrence's political career has been built upon such radical activism. As a founder of the Sunrise Movement, a youth climate organization, he was a driving force behind the economically destructive Green New Deal. He has campaigned unapologetically on his far-left platform, even as he runs in one of the nation's most competitive congressional districts – a district that former President Donald Trump carried by just over one percentage point in 2024.
His candidacy has laid bare the deep chasm within the Democratic Party, with far-left figures like Senator Bernie Sanders endorsing Lawrence, while more moderate Democrats have thrown their weight behind his primary opponents. Despite warnings from some Democratic strategists that his extreme positions could doom the party's chances in November, Lawrence remains dismissive, apparently believing voters are simply "tired of the status quo" and "corporate-funded" candidates. What he seems to miss is that many Americans are tired of radicalism, not common sense.
The Republican National Committee has not hesitated to highlight Lawrence's alarming statements. RNC spokesman Hunter Lovell didn't mince words, stating, "William Lawrence is a Champagne Socialist who attacks American competition and demonizes hard work. Lawrence hates the American way of life, and he is on a terror path to destroy our country as we know it."
The winner of Tuesday's Democratic primary will face incumbent Republican Representative Tom Barrett, in a race widely expected to be a bellwether for national political sentiment. With figures like Lawrence proudly touting an agenda that demonizes hard work and smears political opposition with such vitriol, the choice for Michigan voters, and indeed for the nation, becomes stark: common sense and American values, or radical socialist ideology that seeks to dismantle them. This election is not just about a single district; it is about the very future of the American way of life.
