Missouri's Heroes: National Guard Blackhawks Soar, Saving Hundreds from Catastrophic Floods

When disaster struck southeastern Missouri, unleashing catastrophic flooding that ravaged communities and threatened lives, America's finest answered the call with swift, decisive action. On Friday, Army National Guard troops, piloting eight Blackhawk helicopters, executed a harrowing rescue mission, saving hundreds of young campers from the raging waters, while other first responders bravely plucked stranded residents from rooftops and inundated homes.

More than 200 young campers and their counselors found themselves trapped after torrential rains obliterated roads near Camp Taum Sauk in the small community of Lesterville. It was a perilous situation, but the National Guard's Blackhawk choppers arrived like angels of mercy.

The choppers ferried the rescued children and staff to a nearby elementary school, a safe haven where anxious families awaited, their relief palpable as reunions unfolded. Camp Taum Sauk, a cherished institution founded in 1946 for kids aged eight to sixteen, expressed profound gratitude to the heroes who ensured their community's safety.

“Thank you National Guard, Reynolds County 911 emergency responders and the Arcadia Community. We are beyond thankful for your help keeping our camp community safe,” the camp declared in a public message, a testament to the selfless bravery witnessed.

The peril extended far beyond the camp. Heavy thunderstorms had caused the Black River to swell to a record-shattering nearly 29 feet, creating life-threatening emergencies across the region. Reynolds County emergency services also raced to the scene of a building collapse at the nearby Bearcat Getaway Campground, where initial reports feared as many as 17 people had been swept into the churning floodwaters.

In a miraculous turn, all those initially missing from the collapse were later either rescued or safely accounted for, a testament to the relentless efforts of search and rescue teams.

However, the crisis was not without its heart-wrenching moments. In neighboring Crawford County, a woman remained missing after floodwaters, described as rising "dramatically in a short period of time," tragically washed away a wall in her home. Extensive search operations were launched, continuing into the evening.

First responders in Crawford County utilized "ground teams, watercraft, and aerial drone operations" under "extremely dangerous" conditions to rescue others caught in the deluge, showcasing the multi-faceted heroism demanded by such a crisis. The National Weather Service had issued its highest warning, a flash flood emergency, for thousands in Reynolds and Iron counties, underscoring the severity of the situation.

By Friday afternoon, Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe, a Republican, acted swiftly, declaring a state of emergency to marshal all necessary resources. “Activating the State Emergency Operations Plan allows our agencies to move quickly, coordinate resources, and support local response efforts,” Governor Kehoe affirmed, recognizing the seamless coordination essential in these moments. “I’m grateful for every first responder and local team member working around the clock to help save lives.”

This powerful display of courage and capability by our National Guard and local emergency services in Missouri stands as a profound reminder of American resilience and the unwavering commitment of those who serve. In times of crisis, it is this steadfast dedication, this common-sense approach to protecting our communities, that truly defines the spirit of our nation and keeps Americans safe.
