New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell resigned Friday after an independent investigation substantiated findings of sexual harassment and ethics violations, giving Gov. Mikie Sherrill an early political headache as her administration confronts misconduct inside its own ranks.
Caldwell submitted his resignation after Sherrill gave him until Friday to leave following the release of the investigative findings.
“He submitted his resignation to me this afternoon, which I accepted,” Sherrill said during a news conference in Trenton.
The governor said the investigation determined that Caldwell had “failed to uphold the responsibilities of his office” and exhibited a pattern of behavior that fell short of the standards she expected from members of her administration.
The report centered on an exchange with a female staffer that investigators determined crossed the line into sexual harassment.
According to the findings, the staffer told Caldwell that a younger female friend was not interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with him.
Caldwell then reportedly responded, “you young women are looking for young sperm.”
Investigators concluded that the remark constituted sexual harassment.
They also found Caldwell’s denial that he made the statement was not credible.
That finding ultimately left Caldwell with little room to remain in office after Sherrill demanded his resignation.
Caldwell Had Denied the Allegations
Before the investigation concluded, Caldwell rejected the accusations against him.
He described the allegations as false and misleading and maintained that he expected the facts to clear his name.
The independent investigation reached a different conclusion.
Rather than dismissing the accusations, investigators substantiated the sexual harassment finding and identified additional ethics violations connected to Caldwell’s conduct.
The case now ends with his resignation from the second-highest office in New Jersey.
For Sherrill, the decision puts an immediate end to the controversy surrounding her lieutenant governor, but it also raises questions about how the conduct occurred within her administration and why the matter required an independent investigation before Caldwell left office.
Another Political Distraction for New Jersey Democrats
The resignation comes at a politically inconvenient moment for New Jersey Democrats, who have made ethics, government accountability and responsible leadership recurring themes in state politics.
A lieutenant governor being forced out after an investigation substantiated sexual harassment and ethics violations is hardly the kind of headline any administration wants.
Sherrill attempted to draw a clear line between her administration and Caldwell’s conduct by emphasizing that his behavior failed to meet the standards expected of officials serving under her.
But the episode will nonetheless remain part of the record of her administration.
The governor now has to deal with the practical consequences of Caldwell’s departure while making clear that misconduct by senior officials will not be tolerated.
Caldwell, meanwhile, leaves office after previously insisting that the accusations against him were untrue.
The independent investigation delivered the opposite conclusion.
And with his resignation now submitted and accepted, the controversy that began with allegations has ended with the lieutenant governor himself stepping down.
