This time, the devastating consequences struck chillingly close to home for a prominent Democrat after a reckless illegal immigrant, attempting to evade federal ICE agents, caused a horrific crash on a major highway that injured the wife of a Democratic mayor.
The Wednesday incident has reignited the firestorm over Governor Mikie Sherrill's controversial "Trust Directive"—a policy Republicans argue creates grave public safety risks by systematically undermining the ability of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to collaborate with local law enforcement. Critics contend that the left's response to such crises, which often involves radical calls to abolish ICE rather than strengthening enforcement, is dangerously misguided.
Assemblyman Paul Kanitra, a Republican representing Point Pleasant Beach, minced no words in an exclusive interview, stating, "This is just the latest in a long line of traffic incidents and vehicular incidents that wouldn't occur if New Jersey didn't have our sanctuary status that got codified as soon as Gov. Sherrill came into office." He added, "We all fought against it. We told them that this would create chaos, and it seems like Democrats are unable to take accountability for their own actions."
Kanitra blasted Sherrill and other Democrats for their "inability to take accountability for their own actions here," adding, "They're unable to even recognize the chaos that they're creating, and they're shouting and screaming at everybody else trying to find somebody to blame. It's somewhat ridiculous." He grimly noted, "You kind of reap what you sow," referencing at least two prior fatalities in his district linked to illegal immigrants behind the wheel, including the tragic death of an infant in a separate vehicular incident.
The specific crash unfolded when an illegal immigrant, targeted in an ICE operation, chose to flee. After repeated verbal warnings from officers, the individual sped onto U.S. 130, a heavily trafficked corridor, ran a stoplight, and collided with a Tesla in North Brunswick. One of the victims in the Tesla was the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen.
An ICE spokesperson confirmed the chilling sequence of events: "After repeated verbal warnings and due to officer safety concerns, ICE officers relied on their training and attempted to safely remove the illegal alien [from their car]. The illegal alien then proceeded to flee at a high rate of speed and collided with other vehicles."
State Sen. Mike Testa, a Republican from Vineland, highlighted the frustration of counties like Cape May, which fought unsuccessfully to implement 287(g) agreements for interagency cooperation with ICE. "I think it has only emboldened illegal aliens to engage in illegal behavior. This illegal alien was stopped lawfully by federal authorities, ran through a red light, fleeing federal authorities and unfortunately ran into the mayor of East Brunswick's wife," Testa explained.
While many Democrats have remained conspicuously silent on the incident's implications, the response from Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman, whose district includes the crash site, was anything but. In a shocking display of radical ideology, she tweeted: "Today, it appears an ICE involved car chase resulted in an accident involving the wife of the Mayor of East Brunswick. Abolish ICE."
Testa slammed Watson Coleman's statement as a "stamp of approval from radical leftists" for lawlessness. "This is just another example of lawlessness. And sadly, there's been a stamp of approval from radical leftists like Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman saying ICE should be abolished rather than actually punishing the criminal that put multiple citizens' lives at risk," he stated.
This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils inherent in sanctuary policies that prioritize political agendas over public safety. As Senator Testa passionately asserted, "citizenship should have its privileges."
