War Secretary Pete Hegseth announced what he called a “decisive military victory” over Iran following President Donald Trump’s agreement to a two-week ceasefire. Speaking at the Pentagon, Hegseth said U.S. forces had significantly degraded Iran’s military capabilities during the operation.
Hegseth described Operation Epic Fury as a historic success, claiming that in less than 40 days U.S. Central Command dismantled one of the region’s largest militaries while using less than 10% of America’s total combat power. He emphasized that objectives were achieved “on plan, on schedule,” and credited coordination with Israeli partners.
He also stated that Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones targeting the USS Abraham Lincoln, but said all were intercepted before reaching the vessel. According to Hegseth, the attempted attacks demonstrated Iran’s inability to defend itself or challenge U.S. forces effectively.
The comments came shortly after Trump confirmed the temporary truce, which includes reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz while broader negotiations continue. U.S. troops are expected to remain in the region to enforce the ceasefire and monitor developments.
Trump signaled optimism about a broader peace agreement, stating that Iran is ready to move toward reconstruction and that the United States will help manage maritime traffic through the Strait during the pause in hostilities.
