Peter King Urges Swift Confirmation of Mullin as DHS Threats Intensify

Former Congressman Peter King is sounding the alarm on growing national security threats and calling for immediate action—specifically, the fast confirmation of Sen. Markwayne Mullin as Secretary of Homeland Security. Because, as he makes clear, this isn’t the time for delays or political games.

Speaking on Newsmax, King emphasized that Mullin is well-qualified for the role and should be confirmed “as quickly as possible.” Having worked with him in the House, King described Mullin as strong, capable, and willing to rely on experts where needed. In other words, someone focused on results—not headlines.

King stressed that leadership at DHS must be grounded in facts and intelligence, not personalities or partisan agendas. According to him, Mullin would bring exactly that kind of approach—hard-driven, fact-based decision-making at a time when it’s needed most.

Mullin’s nomination recently advanced out of a Senate committee in a narrow 8-7 vote, moving one step closer to full Senate confirmation. The vote itself reflected the current political divide, with even some cross-party movement—because apparently, national security can still surprise people now and then.

But King didn’t hold back when addressing opposition to the nomination, criticizing what he sees as unnecessary partisan resistance. Drawing on his experience during the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, he made it clear that security should never be politicized.

And his warning comes at a critical moment. King pointed to rising global tensions, including the ongoing conflict involving Iran, along with concerns about reduced intelligence capabilities in recent years. His message? The U.S. may be facing threats it doesn’t fully see yet—and that’s exactly why strong leadership matters.

He also highlighted the need to reinforce key areas of homeland security, including missile defense systems, airport screening through TSA, and cybersecurity operations. Coordination between federal agencies, the FBI, and local law enforcement, he said, is more important than ever.

Recent incidents only add to the urgency, with reports of individuals returning from overseas with the capability to carry out sophisticated attacks. As King put it, vulnerabilities have increased in just the past couple of weeks—a trend that’s hard to ignore.

At the end of the day, the message is straightforward: when threats are rising, leadership can’t wait. And with the confirmation process moving forward, the focus now is on ensuring the Department of Homeland Security is equipped and ready to protect the country.

Because when it comes to national security, acting quickly isn’t just important—it’s essential.
