Rep. Mary Miller: SAVE Act Is ‘Ground Zero’ for Protecting American Elections

Rep. Mary Miller is urging the Senate to take immediate action on election integrity legislation, calling the SAVE America Act a critical step in protecting the future of the United States.

Speaking Thursday on Newsmax’s “National Report,” the Illinois Republican said passing the bill is essential to safeguarding American elections and restoring confidence in the voting system.

“This is ground zero to save our country,” Miller said, emphasizing that the legislation is a key priority under the leadership of Donald Trump.

Miller said she believes the Senate will ultimately bring the bill forward, pointing to Republican leadership and growing public demand for stronger election safeguards. The proposal is expected to face scrutiny in the Senate, where Majority Leader John Thune could determine whether the legislation receives a full debate.

According to Miller, the SAVE Act focuses on strengthening voter verification measures, including requirements for voter identification and proof of citizenship. She argued that election integrity cannot be separated from broader immigration policies and border security concerns.

“DHS funding and this issue of election integrity, voter ID, and proof of citizenship—it is tied together,” Miller said.

She accused Democrats of attempting to weaken election safeguards, arguing that open-border policies could affect voting systems if proper verification standards are not enforced.

Former President Barack Obama was also referenced during the discussion, with Miller warning that efforts to reshape the country’s political system continue through Democratic policies.

President Trump himself highlighted the issue during remarks in Kentucky, emphasizing the importance of voter verification.

“We want voter ID. We want proof of citizenship,” Trump said.

Miller argued that voter identification laws are widely supported by Americans. According to her, public backing for such measures is overwhelming, and she criticized opponents of the proposal for what she described as misleading arguments about voter access.

“They’re acting like women, rural Americans, Black and brown people cannot get proof of citizenship or show an ID,” Miller said. “It’s ridiculous.”

The Illinois congresswoman said the Senate should hold a debate and force lawmakers to publicly take a position on the bill.

“Put it on the floor, have a talking filibuster, put people on record,” she said. “Make the Democrats vote yes or no.”

For Miller, the stakes go beyond a single piece of legislation. She said the country’s future—and the system that will be passed on to future generations—depends on maintaining secure elections.

“Any civilized nation has secure elections,” Miller said.

Despite the political fight ahead, Miller expressed confidence that action will come soon. If supporters have their way, the SAVE Act could become a centerpiece of the broader push to reinforce election integrity across the United States—and a reminder that protecting the vote remains one of the most important responsibilities of any democracy. ??
