While Minneapolis often grabs headlines for its anti-ICE antics, Seattle is quietly running its own left-wing experiment under newly sworn-in socialist Mayor Katie Wilson. This week, Wilson announced that she wants Seattle police not only to “track ICE” but also to share their findings with community organizations to ensure these groups have “the latest and most accurate information about ICE activities.” In other words, she wants officers to become ICE trackers for local activist groups. You can’t make this stuff up.
The Seattle Police Officers Guild isn’t having it. Mike Solan, the guild’s president, delivered what can only be described as the perfect response: the mayor’s plan is misguided, distracts officers from protecting the public, and essentially asks them to serve as handmaidens to anti-ICE community partners. Translation: Seattle cops are being asked to babysit federal enforcement while leaving their own neighborhoods exposed.
Solan’s stance highlights a simple truth: police already have more than enough on their plates without being turned into political tools. The mayor’s directive undermines public safety and puts law-abiding citizens at risk—all in the name of appeasing activist agendas.
This isn’t unprecedented. In Los Angeles, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell refused to have his officers enforce Governor Gavin Newsom’s “no-mask ban” on federal agents, rightly prioritizing officer discretion and public safety over political theater. Meanwhile, Democrats like Newsom and Wilson continue to ignore the consequences of their policies, leaving chaos in their wake.
Thankfully, in Seattle, some law enforcement leaders still have sense and the courage to call out nonsense when they see it. Their pushback is a reminder that protecting communities should always come before pandering to political ideologues. When law-abiding citizens are left vulnerable because of ideological games, that’s when leadership—and sanity—really matters.
