The fight over funding the Department of Homeland Security is heating up, with Democrats demanding new restrictions on Immigration and Customs Enforcement as the price for keeping the government running. Funny how they never cared about ICE under Barack Obama or Joe Biden, but suddenly it’s a crisis now that Donald Trump is back in charge. What a coincidence.
Friday is the deadline before a partial shutdown kicks in unless Congress passes another stopgap extension. Thanks to the One Big Beautiful Bill passed last year, ICE already has significant funding, so these Democratic theatrics won’t hit them nearly as hard as they’ll hit other DHS agencies like FEMA, TSA, and the United States Secret Service. But facts rarely survive contact with political posturing.
Enter Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA), who delivered a blunt — and hilarious — message to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about the Democrats’ list of ICE demands, which include banning masks and restricting enforcement near schools, courts, and polling places. Kennedy noted that when Democrats say they don’t want ICE near polling locations, they’re kind of telling on themselves. Why would illegal aliens be at polling places unless they were trying to vote?
“The Karen wing of the Democratic Party wants to defund ICE, just like they wanted to defund the police,” Kennedy said. “And we know how that vampire movie turned out.” He added that this same “Karen wing” now controls the Democratic Party and would punish any Democrat who voted to keep DHS funded.
Kennedy said that even if Republicans agreed to Schumer’s conditions — which they won’t — Schumer couldn’t deliver the votes anyway. He described Schumer as “wandering around like a roomba, looking like a man who just lost his luggage.” Not exactly the image of firm leadership.
The DHS did agree to body cameras for ICE agents, but Democrats quickly pivoted and began calling it “mass surveillance,” demanding restrictions in the name of “privacy.” Translation: once they realized body cams wouldn’t help their narrative — and might actually expose bad behavior — the tune changed fast.
In the end, Democrats’ strategy of demonizing ICE won’t hurt ICE nearly as much as it will hurt FEMA, TSA, and the Secret Service. And when that reality hits, it’s going to land squarely on the people playing politics with public safety.
Bottom line: while Democrats posture for their base, Republicans are focused on keeping the country secure and the government open. And judging by Kennedy’s message, Schumer’s demands aren’t just unrealistic — they’re politically doomed.
