Sen. Ossoff Requires ID at Campaign Rally While Opposing ID to Vote

Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff is requiring government-issued identification for members of the public to attend his campaign rally Saturday — even as he continues to oppose similar identification requirements for voting in elections.

Ossoff has emerged as one of the most vocal opponents of election security measures in the Senate. He not only opposes the SAVE Act, which would require government-issued identification to vote, but has also introduced legislation to enshrine into law the right to vote without proving one’s identity. His bill, misleadingly titled the Right to Vote Act, would make it harder for states to implement voter ID requirements aimed at ensuring election integrity.

“Jon Ossoff is about to vote against the SAVE Act, but is requiring a government-issued ID to get into his rally in Atlanta tomorrow,” a campaign account for Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA), a Republican primary challenger to Ossoff, posted Friday. “There should be more security in American elections than there is to listen to Jon Ossoff’s lies.”

Ossoff has worked closely with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to oppose voter ID requirements, often invoking the legacy of civil rights leader John Lewis to argue their case.

“It’s Jim Crow 2.0, and I called it Jim Crow 2.0, and the right wing went nuts all over the Internet,” Schumer said Thursday on MS NOW. “That’s because they know it’s true. What they’re trying to do here is the same thing that was done in the South for decades to prevent people of color from voting.”

Schumer continued, “If you can’t find a birth certificate, or a proper ID, you’ll be discriminated against,” describing voter ID laws as “vicious and nasty.”

In an effort to stir concern among suburban female voters, Schumer also claimed that women who change their last name after marriage would be unable to vote, suggesting they would be incapable of securing updated identification from the DMV or other government agencies.
