President Donald Trump didn’t hesitate to respond after news broke that Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, is believed to have been abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona. On Tuesday, Trump vowed to personally call Savannah Guthrie and offer federal assistance as authorities scramble to figure out what happened. Funny how leadership looks a lot like… actually leading.
According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home around 9:30 p.m. Saturday and was reported missing by her family around noon Sunday. Officials said they believe she was kidnapped or abducted and confirmed that blood was found outside the home. Not exactly the kind of mystery anyone wants to solve.
During a Q&A session in the Oval Office, Trump called the situation “terrible” and said he is considering sending additional federal agents to help with the investigation. “I’m going to call [Savannah Guthrie] later on. I think it’s a terrible thing… very unusual situation, but we’re going to find out,” Trump said.
Despite their very public clash during an NBC town hall in October 2020, Trump pointed out that he always got along well with Savannah Guthrie. That town hall, of course, featured Guthrie pressing Trump on COVID-19 policies and even accusing him of “sending a lie” to his followers — comparing him to “someone’s crazy uncle.” Yet here we are, with Trump still stepping up when her family needs help. Classy move, Mr. President.
As the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI continue their investigation, officials confirmed they are “aware” of reports of possible ransom notes connected to the case. “Anything that comes in goes directly to our detectives who are coordinating with the FBI,” the sheriff’s office said.
TMZ and KOLD 13 News reported Tuesday that they received unverified ransom notes demanding money for Nancy Guthrie’s return. The note reportedly demanded millions in Bitcoin cryptocurrency, and TMZ said it verified the Bitcoin address was real. The letter was sent to authorities and allegedly contained unreleased details about the disappearance, along with a deadline.
So while law enforcement works the case and the FBI gets involved, President Trump is doing what presidents are supposed to do in moments like this — offering help, attention, and action. In a situation filled with fear and uncertainty, that kind of leadership matters. And with federal resources now potentially in play, there’s real hope that Nancy Guthrie will be found and safely returned to her family.
