Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) sharply criticized Dr. Anthony Fauci following his testimony before the Senate Homeland Security Committee, calling him a “lying disgrace who should be prosecuted.”
In an exclusive statement, Cotton accused Fauci of working with leftist media outlets to smear critics — including himself — who raised the possibility of a COVID-19 lab leak from Wuhan early in the pandemic. “In January 2020, I warned China was lying and the COVID virus almost certainly came from China’s coronavirus lab,” Cotton said. “Tony Fauci’s diary shows how he worked with the liberal media to smear me, cover for China, and lie to the American people.”
Cotton was among the first lawmakers to publicly question the official narrative and call for an investigation into the virus’s origins. In early 2020, he wrote to senior Trump administration officials urging scrutiny of the Wuhan Institute of Virology, a biosafety level-4 lab studying coronaviruses. Mainstream outlets at the time dismissed the lab-leak hypothesis as a fringe conspiracy theory.
Media headlines from that period included The New York Times labeling it a “Fringe Theory,” HuffPost warning not to listen to Cotton, CNN describing his comments as “a dangerous game,” and Business Insider calling it a “thoroughly debunked theory.”
Years later, many of those same outlets acknowledged the lab-leak theory as plausible. Cotton pointed to Fauci’s recently released diaries, which reportedly show private discussions among scientists considering a lab origin while Fauci publicly downplayed it.
“Fauci is a lying disgrace who should be prosecuted. And the left must never be given power again,” Cotton concluded.
The senator’s remarks come after Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment numerous times during Wednesday’s hearing, refusing to answer questions on the origins of the virus, gain-of-function research, and related issues. The hearing, chaired by Sen. Rand Paul, highlighted ongoing partisan battles over the U.S. government’s handling of the pandemic and transparency regarding its origins.
