The family of 84-year-old Arizona resident Nancy Guthrie is enduring every family’s worst fear after she was reported missing this week. Mrs. Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today Show” co-host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen around 9:45 p.m. Saturday by one of her children.
When she failed to appear at Sunday church, a concerned family member filed a missing persons report. From the start, authorities did not believe this was a case of an elderly woman simply wandering off or deciding to take a late-night road trip — because, shockingly, most people don’t do that at 84.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos initially said investigators believed a crime had occurred. Later, he revealed an even more disturbing possibility: that Mrs. Guthrie may have been taken from her home while she was asleep in her bed.
“The disappearance is very disturbing to the community,” Nanos told MS NOW, formerly known as MSNBC, explaining that investigators believe she was removed from her house against her will. “You have an 84-year-old lady who is home in bed, asleep in the middle of night (and) disappears,” he said. “That’s not Tucson and that’s not who we are here.”
Nanos also disclosed that he sent homicide detectives to what he described as a “concerning” scene, despite the absence of a body. “It’s rare for me to call out our homicide team unless we have a body,” he said during the interview. That statement alone tells you just how seriously authorities are taking this case.
