The catalyst for this latest surge was a Spanish Supreme Court ruling earlier this month. The court declared it unlawful for migrants arriving by sea to be repelled, effectively rendering border police powerless. Even if migrants swam just a few yards from neighboring Morocco, authorities found their hands tied, unable to enforce sovereign borders. This judicial activism, disguised as human rights, served as a siren call for those seeking illegal entry, turning the border into a legal fiction.
For days, the local government of Ceuta pleaded with the national government in Madrid for help, demanding a national emergency declaration, army deployment, and border closure. Their pleas were met with characteristic socialist indifference. Spain's hard-left Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez initially downplayed the crisis, stating his government "doesn't consider mass migration a threat to national security." Because, apparently, 20,000 uncontrolled entries into a small territory are just a minor inconvenience.
Finally, under immense pressure, the army has been deployed. However, the nature of this deployment raises serious questions. Given the Supreme Court's ban on pushbacks and the socialist government's openly pro-migrant policies, it is far from clear whether these troops will actually defend the border. Instead, they are more likely to be used to process and assist the new arrivals, rather than to prevent further entries. "The Armed Forces will reinforce the Civil Guard in the exercise of its powers and any other duties that may be necessary to maintain security in the city of Ceuta," the government vaguely stated, leaving ample room for interpretation.
Adding insult to injury, Moroccan border officers were reportedly observed making no effort to prevent the flow of migrants, leaving Spanish police on their own. The consequences, of course, will not be confined to Ceuta or even Spain. Migrants arriving in Spanish territory use it as a springboard to access Europe's open internal travel area. Alice Weidel, leader of Alternative for Germany (AfD), warned that many of these new arrivals would head straight to Germany, unequivocally stating, "2015 must not repeat itself." Farage echoed this dire warning, emphasizing that many of these individuals would soon be making their way towards Britain. "It's time to wake up everybody. Just have a look at these scenes… tens of thousands, maybe more, breaking into that little part of Spain. The authorities seemingly powerless to act," he declared.
Farage’s stark warning cuts to the core of the issue: "those scenes you are seeing in Spain today, many of those young men, lots of them dangerous will be heading towards Calais and coming to our country too. It is time to wake up. This is a battle for the future of our civilisation, I can’t put it any more clearly than that."
