The Sunday afternoon assault saw three Moroccan nationals target military personnel in Ceuta’s San Amaro neighborhood, pelting them with bottles containing a dangerous corrosive substance. Fortunately, none of the military officials were injured in the ambush. Spanish Civil Guard officials responded swiftly, successfully apprehending the perpetrators in a rapid search operation.
Law enforcement officials indicated to El Mundo that the attack was 'prepared' and noted the military personnel were unarmed and without protective gear at the time—an astonishing vulnerability for those on the front lines. This calculated aggression is not an isolated incident.
The weekend saw multiple reports of similar violence, including corrosive liquid attacks against peaceful residents of Ceuta who were protesting the unresolved migrant invasion of their city. Beyond that, El Mundo detailed two separate ambushes and stone-throwing attacks against the military between Thursday and Saturday, leaving at least five service members injured.
Even more alarming are the reports linking non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to these violent acts. Local police officers reportedly identified members of the 'No Name Kitchen' NGO purchasing materials at Ceuta supermarkets that were later used in these homemade explosives. A separate report from Ok Diario states this NGO is accused of housing illegal migrants at a facility in Ceuta and supplying them with the very materials used to create these dangerous projectiles.
The anti-mass migration VOX party has not minced words, publicly accusing No Name Kitchen and demanding the European Union freeze any project funding it may have with the organization. Vox MEP Jorge Buxadé powerfully articulated the outrage: "We cannot allow NGOs that are complicit in the invasion and enemies of the Spanish people to continue acting like criminal organizations, especially with public funds, and especially when they attack our defenders."
The escalating danger has prompted the Spanish Troops and Sailors Association (ATME) to issue an urgent call for military personnel to be recognized as holding a high-risk profession and to be designated as agents of authority.
