In an explosive agency-wide email distributed on Friday to hundreds of colleagues, Daniel Wiesenfeld laid bare the alleged scheme, stating he was explicitly instructed “to find and pursue crimes committed by specific individuals and organizations affiliated with Donald Trump.” This isn't how law and order are supposed to function in a free republic.
Wiesenfeld, a former Brooklyn prosecutor now serving in the Investor Protection Bureau, didn't pull punches. He drew a chilling comparison, asserting that James’ office was engaging in the very political targeting it falsely accuses others of doing. He specifically named his bureau chief, Shamiso Maswoswe, as the official who allegedly directed him to target President Trump, Truth Social, and even Hewlett-Packard – a company whose merger had already received federal approval from the Justice Department – all “without having a credible reason.” Apparently, 'credible reason' is optional when the target is named Trump.

“If you believe Trump is using (Department of Justice) attorneys to prosecute his enemies and further his political interests, you should find it equally troubling that Tish (James) is doing exactly the same thing,” Wiesenfeld wrote, according to the Times Union. He then issued a powerful plea to his colleagues: “I ask that you not serve as Tish’s personal attorneys by targeting her political enemies." That part should not be complicated.

Wiesenfeld further accused James’ office of squandering “significant public taxpayer dollars to target convenient public enemies” while simultaneously ignoring pressing issues like “rampant nonprofit homeless shelter fraud and antisemitic crimes in and around synagogues.” It seems some crimes are more politically convenient than others for the Attorney General.
Following the suspicious deletion of Wiesenfeld's email from state servers, James' general counsel, Kumiki Gibson, reportedly circulated a follow-up agency-wide email, attempting to downplay the incident as an “internal” personnel matter and assuring staff no one was “in danger.” A strange message to send when an internal whistleblower has just exposed alleged political corruption.
A spokeswoman for James, Alexis Richards, stated, “This is a personnel matter, and the employee in question has been placed on administrative leave with full pay.” She added, “The office of the attorney general is committed to upholding New York’s laws and protecting the rights and freedoms of all New Yorkers, regardless of political beliefs. We strongly reject any assertion to the contrary.” A predictable, boilerplate denial when facing uncomfortable truths.
For those paying attention, this revelation comes as no surprise. Attorney General James openly declared her intentions years ago. “We will prosecute the president for crimes committed in New York state,” she announced in December of 2018, before even holding office.
