Spanberger Floats New Taxes on Streaming and Gym Memberships—Because Apparently Subscriptions Aren’t Expensive Enough

In what sounds like welcome news for absolutely no one with a monthly subscription (so…everyone), Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signaled she’s open to the idea of new taxes on things like streaming services and gym memberships.
During an interview, Spanberger was asked directly whether she would veto or sign a bill that could impose taxes on everyday services like streaming platforms, dry cleaning, and more if it ever reached her desk. Her response? Not exactly a hard “no.”
“I think every idea, as long as it’s reasonable and makes some amount of sense, should be entertained and should be discussed,” she said—leaving the door wide open for proposals that could hit consumers right where it hurts: their monthly bills.
Spanberger did try to draw a comparison, noting that when people used to buy DVDs, they paid sales tax—implying that streaming services could be viewed in a similar light. Of course, back then you bought a DVD once. Now? You pay every single month. But sure, totally the same thing.
To be fair, she emphasized that any final decision would depend on the specifics of a bill, stating she would evaluate proposals based on their details. Still, the idea that these kinds of taxes are even on the table is enough to raise concerns for many Virginians already dealing with rising costs.
It’s also worth noting that the proposals she referenced never made it through the General Assembly. But as this conversation shows, just because something didn’t pass once doesn’t mean it’s gone for good.
At a time when Americans are watching every dollar, the possibility of new taxes on everyday conveniences like entertainment and fitness is bound to get attention—and not the good kind.
In the end, voters will be paying close attention to where leaders stand on issues like this. Because when it comes to taxes, “just a discussion” has a funny way of turning into reality.
