On Friday, a targeted shooting incident at a Spirit Halloween store in the Solano Town Center Mall in Fairfield, CA, left a pregnant woman dead and six other people wounded. This horrific event unfolded in the Bay Area of Northern California, a region often presented as a model for progressive governance.
Local ABC7 News provided the tragic details, reporting that gunfire erupted around 8:30 p.m. inside the Halloween costume store at the Solano Town Center. Police confirmed the shooting "stemmed from a targeted incident involving one suspect." The deceased woman was identified as Constance Hages, 31, and her family informed authorities she was pregnant. Three male victims, ages 16, 19, and 32, were hospitalized in critical condition, with a 23-year-old man also in critical but stable condition. Two additional men, 19 and 43, were treated for gunshot wounds and subsequently released.
As of Saturday, the suspect or suspects remain at large, with the Fairfield Police Department providing no further information on the identity of those targeted or the perpetrator(s).
Harrowing video footage captured the scene of sheer panic as people attempted to flee the mall. One witness described her ordeal, detailing the terror that gripped shoppers. Jocelyn Lopez Tabares, a 15-year-old from Vallejo, was with her 23-year-old sister, picking up last-minute costume accessories when a barrage of shots rang out. "I felt like I was going to die," Lopez Tabares recounted to the California Post. "I thought it was going to be my last time living. I didn’t want to die that way."
Lopez Tabares, standing near the checkout registers, initially mistook the gunfire for popping balloons until her sister instinctively pulled her to the concrete floor. "Out of nowhere, we just hear at least 10 shots go off," she said. "I was in shock, and everyone just went down. My sister pulled me down because I couldn’t move. I was so scared." Amidst the screams and the stampede of dozens of shoppers rushing for the exits, the teenager found herself frozen. "All I could hear was people screaming and running from the back to the front," she added.
The Solano Town Center Mall remains an active crime scene, forcing the disruption of scheduled Halloween weekend events, including a "Mall-O-Ween" trick-or-treating event, due to the heavy police presence and ongoing investigation.
This senseless act of violence occurred in California, a state that boasts some of the most stringent gun laws in the nation. Yet, despite these heavy-handed restrictions, criminals continue to terrorize innocent citizens with tragic frequency. Predictably, Democrat Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) couldn't resist politicizing the tragedy. In an X post offering his condolences, he immediately pivoted to pushing a gun control agenda, rather than focusing on the glaring failure of existing policies to protect his constituents from such horrors.
Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall has urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Fairfield Police Department at (707) 428-7600. As authorities seek answers and the perpetrators, this incident serves as a stark reminder that highly restrictive gun laws do little to deter those intent on violence in California's increasingly dangerous urban centers. True safety comes from upholding law and order, ensuring swift accountability for criminals, and rejecting the reflexive, failed policies that consistently leave law-abiding citizens vulnerable to such senseless acts.
