Trump Administration Cuts Ties With Dozens of Progressive Groups, Ends Millions in Funding

The Trump administration is taking what officials describe as decisive action to realign federal priorities, with the Department of the Interior announcing the termination of 43 partnerships with outside organizations that it says no longer support the department’s mission.

Led by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, the department determined that the agreements were “operating in direct opposition” to its objectives. According to the agency, ending the partnerships will eliminate more than $4 million in planned funding tied to programs involving diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), environmental justice initiatives, and support services for illegal immigrants.

In a statement, the Department of the Interior said that under Burgum’s leadership it is ending relationships with organizations that no longer reflect what it described as the priorities of the American people. The agency also announced that it will remove references to the affected groups from its websites and formally terminate all existing agreements.

It makes sense.

The move represents part of the broader effort by President Donald Trump’s administration to reshape federal agencies and redirect taxpayer resources toward programs it believes more closely align with its policy agenda. Administration officials have repeatedly argued that federal departments should focus on their core missions rather than advancing political or ideological initiatives.

Supporters of the decision say taxpayers expect government agencies to prioritize public services, resource management, and national interests rather than funding organizations whose objectives may conflict with the administration’s stated goals. After all, every administration is elected to implement its agenda, not preserve programs simply because they already exist.

The decision is likely to draw both support and criticism as affected organizations respond to the announcement. For the administration, however, the move signals a continued commitment to restructuring federal partnerships and ensuring that government funding is directed toward initiatives that best serve the interests of the American people.
