President Donald Trump is once again putting American taxpayers first—this time by freezing all immigration from Somalia after an internal State Department investigation uncovered widespread abuse of the U.S. welfare system.
According to information obtained by the Daily Caller, the State Department is halting immigration processing from Somalia while officials reassess procedures. The goal is straightforward: prevent the entry of foreign nationals who would become a public charge on the American people. It’s almost as if immigration policy is supposed to work for Americans—what a concept.
The investigation found that the vast majority of Somali migrants take welfare once in the United States, triggering serious concerns about long-term costs to taxpayers. In response, the Trump administration is using the State Department’s long-standing authority to shut down what it sees as clear exploitation of the system.
“Under President Trump, we will not allow aliens to abuse America’s immigration system and exploit the generosity of the American people,” Deputy Principal Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said. He added that for years, foreign nationals from Somalia have entered the U.S. and extracted taxpayer wealth by taking welfare at what he described as “obscene rates.” Strong words—but apparently supported by the facts.
The move comes as the Somali community, particularly in Minnesota, has faced growing scrutiny following reports accusing some members of stealing millions in taxpayer funds through fraud schemes. Minnesota alone is home to roughly 80,000 Somalis, most of whom are foreign-born, with the majority living in the Minneapolis area. Coincidentally—or not—that same region has become a focal point for federal enforcement efforts.
The Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday that it is ending Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals currently living in the United States. DHS also deployed additional officers to the Minneapolis region to arrest illegal aliens, including child rapists, murderers, and other convicted criminal migrants. Yes, those are exactly the people the system was supposed to keep out in the first place.
“Temporary means temporary,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said, explaining that conditions in Somalia have improved enough that the country no longer meets the legal requirements for Temporary Protected Status. Simple law, simply enforced.
This latest action underscores a consistent theme of the Trump presidency: generosity without accountability doesn’t work. By freezing immigration from Somalia, restoring the meaning of “temporary” protections, and cracking down on fraud and criminal activity, President Trump is reaffirming that America’s immigration system exists to serve Americans—not be exploited at their expense.
Law, order, and fairness are back on the table—and that’s good news for taxpayers, communities, and a system finally being taken seriously again.
