House Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green (R-TN) announced this week that he is reversing his decision to retire after receiving calls from former President Donald Trump and others.
Green appeared burned out when he announced earlier this month that he was retiring, saying that he believed the country and Congress were ābroken beyond most means of repair.ā
āI have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington,ā he added at the time. āAs I have done my entire life, I will continue serving this country ā but in a new capacity.ā
Green said on Thursday that while he initially had a āstrong desireā to leave Congress, āsince my announcement, I have received countless calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider.ā
The former military officer said that he was āreminded of the words of General McArthur on a statue at West Point: āDuty, honor, country.ā I realized once again: I had a duty to my country to fulfill.ā
Trump praised Green on social media earlier in the day, writing: āMark Green has had lots of options because of his political talents, and the great job he has done as a Congressman, but given the fantastic work heās doing as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, I hope he runs for Re-Election to the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement!ā
