Trump Taps Kevin Warsh to Lead the Fed, Signaling a New Direction for Monetary Policy

President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is nominating Kevin Warsh to serve as chairman of the Federal Reserve, ending weeks of speculation over who would replace Jerome Powell when his term expires in May. The announcement came via Truth Social, where Trump praised Warsh as “one of the GREAT Fed Chairmen, maybe the best.” No suspenseful drumroll needed—Trump went straight to the point.

Warsh, a former member of the Fed’s Board of Governors, steps in at a time when Trump has repeatedly urged the central bank to cut interest rates faster. The Fed kept its benchmark short-term rate unchanged this week after three consecutive cuts last year, a move that earned fresh criticism from Trump. Apparently, patience is not a monetary strategy anymore.

Warsh served on the Board of Governors from 2006 to 2011 and worked closely with then-Chair Ben Bernanke during the 2008–09 financial crisis. He resigned before his term was up and has since become one of the Fed’s most vocal critics, calling for “regime change” and a major overhaul of how the central bank sets interest rates. In other words, he knows the system from the inside—and he’s not impressed with how it’s been running.

In his announcement, Trump highlighted Warsh’s current academic and professional roles. Warsh is the Shepard Family Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Economics at the Hoover Institution and a lecturer at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. He is also a partner of Stanley Druckenmiller at Duquesne Family Office LLC, adding Wall Street experience to his résumé.

With Warsh’s background in crisis management, his outspoken stance on reform, and Trump’s push for a more growth-focused approach, the nomination signals a clear shift in direction for the Federal Reserve. It’s a move aimed at shaking up the status quo and putting economic momentum back in the driver’s seat. And if there’s one thing this pick makes clear, it’s that Trump is betting on bold leadership—and that’s a bet many Americans are ready to see pay off.
