Trump Warns of Possible Land Strikes on Venezuelan and Colombian Drug Operations Summary

President Trump reiterated on Tuesday that he may order military strikes against land-based drug trafficking operations in Venezuela and warned that Colombian operators could also be targeted. For months, he has considered expanding his existing campaign, which has focused on bombing alleged drug-carrying vessels in international waters.

When asked about potential land strikes, Trump said he would act if the U.S. believes traffickers are building facilities producing fentanyl or cocaine. He also shifted attention to Colombia, criticizing the country for allegedly manufacturing and selling cocaine that ends up in the United States.

Trump previously stated on October 23 that he was preparing to notify Congress of possible land attacks inside Venezuela but has held back while attempting to negotiate the resignation and exile of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

According to an administration official, Trump may authorize strikes within Venezuela’s territorial waters before moving to land targets. Since September 2, the U.S. military has conducted attacks on at least 22 vessels allegedly carrying drugs off the coasts of Venezuela and Colombia, resulting in at least 83 deaths.
