U.S. Remains World's Top Oils Producer for Another Year

The United States solidified its position as the world’s largest crude oil producer in 2025, reaching a new record-high output of 13.6 million barrels per day, according to the latest data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

America’s production significantly outpaced its closest competitors: Russia came in second with 9.9 million bpd, followed by Saudi Arabia at 9.6 million bpd and Canada at 5 million bpd. The gap between the U.S. and other major producers widened last year, even as global energy markets faced disruptions from the conflict with Iran.

This marks the eighth consecutive year that the United States has held the top spot since overtaking Russia in 2018. The 2025 figure also shattered the previous global and U.S. record of 13.2 million bpd set in 2024. The EIA credited continued gains in drilling productivity and operational efficiency in key shale basins — particularly the Permian Basin — for the strong performance.

In addition to record production, U.S. exports reached new highs. In April 2026, crude oil exports averaged 5.6 million barrels per day, a 21% increase over the previous record. This surge helped meet global demand while energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz were disrupted.

Looking ahead, the EIA forecasts U.S. crude oil production to average around 13.7 million bpd in 2026 and rise further to 14.2 million bpd in 2027.

The sustained dominance comes amid policy moves by the Trump administration to expand domestic drilling, including new offshore leases off Alaska, Florida, and California, as well as lease sales in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. Despite lower average oil prices in 2025, American producers continued to deliver record volumes thanks to technological advances in shale development.
