Her abrupt exit, just ten days after "moderate" Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley dropped out to endorse her, highlighted the deep cracks forming in the Democrat machine.
In a desperate attempt to stem the bleeding, the party quickly coaxed Crowley back into the race. But the establishment's rescue mission immediately backfired as reports surfaced about Crowley's own "Platneresque" scandal – a past social media account from 15 years ago containing sexist and homophobic posts. Adding another layer to the Democrat implosion, former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes also abruptly ended his campaign amidst swirling news reports of a 2025 state Democrat Party investigation into allegations "that Barnes had taken advantage of his role in the party for sexual encounters with women." While the party claimed the allegations "were too vague to be verified and did not take further action," the timing of Barnes's withdrawal speaks volumes about the deepening crisis within Wisconsin's Democrat ranks.
Meanwhile, on the Republican side, the Trump-backed presumptive nominee, Rep. Tom Tiffany (WI-07), has been laser-focused on exposing Hong's radical record and her extreme DSA positions. Tiffany's early and decisive targeting of Hong suggests a keen understanding that she is increasingly likely to be his general election opponent, a stark contrast for Wisconsin voters.
Yet, the conservative movement in Wisconsin is not taking anything for granted, recognizing the left's ability to adapt and repackage its radical agenda. As Milwaukee GOP Vice Chair Brett Galaszewski wisely cautioned, "We as conservatives in Wisconsin need to be careful with this "Hong is done for" mentality."
Galaszewski explained further: "Yes, I LOVE our chances with her vs. TomTiffanyWI. But we're also watching Hong evolve in real time. She's polishing her image, dressing more like a governor, and walking back a lot of the DSA-aligned things she has said in the past. She's also surrounded herself with new faces/consultants — including what appears to be a new comms director who was with her in the spin room video circulating this week. I think the WisDems upper brass knows she has a real path and is pushing serious resources/consultants in. We have to stay disciplined. The moment you assume a race is over is the moment you stop doing the work it takes to win. Complacency loses elections!"
