Wisconsin ‘Refusing to Learn the Lesson’ of Minnesota After Fraud Scandal, GOP Gubernatorial Hopeful Warns

Minnesota may be drowning in a $1 billion fraud disaster, but apparently Wisconsin’s Democratic leadership thinks they’re immune to reality. According to Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., the state is on track to repeat its neighbor’s embarrassing Feeding Our Future–style collapse — all because Gov. Tony Evers seems more interested in blocking oversight than protecting taxpayers. What a shock.

Tiffany, who’s running for governor in 2026, called out the retiring Democrat governor for proudly rejecting the Trump administration’s push to audit SNAP programs nationwide. Because when billions in taxpayer dollars are at risk, the responsible thing to do — at least in Democrat-land — is to deny it and hope no one notices.

In a letter Tiffany planned to send to Evers on Thursday, he didn’t sugarcoat his frustration. “Like many Wisconsin residents, I was disappointed by your recent public statements ruling out cooperation with the federal government to detect fraud in the food stamp program,” he wrote. He pointed out the obvious: everyone should agree that fraud in essential programs is unacceptable. Apparently everyone except Gov. Evers.

Tiffany also noted the irony: Minnesota’s governor is neck-deep in scrutiny over a massive scandal involving members of the Twin Cities’ Somali community allegedly diverting taxpayer-funded meal money overseas — including to Al-Shabaab. But Evers, despite watching the mess right next door, still thinks fraud prevention is optional. Bold strategy.

He warned that refusing to police SNAP abuse puts the entire program at risk and “effectively prioritizes the ability of scammers and illegal aliens to bilk this program. This makes no sense,” he added — which is putting it mildly.

Earlier that day, Tiffany blasted Evers on social media after the governor brushed off a request from USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins. “Governor Evers is refusing to let federal agencies check Wisconsin’s food stamp rolls for fraud,” he wrote. “What are Democrats hiding? We do not want to end up like Minnesota with billions in stolen tax dollars.”

Evers, meanwhile, told a local ABC affiliate that he’s perfectly comfortable with the status quo because the system is “analyzed every single year.” He claimed the USDA was just “looking for ways to get out of doing it.” Very reassuring — unless you’re a taxpayer.

This isn’t the first time Evers has tried to stonewall federal oversight. Near the end of November’s government shutdown, he and several blue-state governors fought back against the Trump administration’s request that states undo SNAP payments after USDA suspended disbursements. When the administration pushed back, Evers’ entire response was one word: “No.” Inspirational leadership right there.

Other Wisconsin Republicans weren’t shy about criticizing his stance. Rep. Bryan Steil warned that Democrats’ refusal to reopen the government was harming the very families they claim to protect. But as he pointed out, their “radical base” wants them to oppose Trump at all costs — even if it means putting American families through unnecessary hardship.

And while Democrats were busy saying “no,” Wisconsin Republicans were working to carve out SNAP funding to protect families during the shutdown.

In the end, Tiffany’s message couldn’t be clearer: preventing fraud isn’t partisan — it’s common sense. And if Wisconsin wants to avoid becoming Minnesota 2.0, now is the time to act. A positive sign? At least someone in the state is still serious about protecting taxpayers.
