18 House Republicans Defy Trump, Push Ukraine Aid Package Toward Veto Showdown

A group of 18 House Republicans broke ranks with President Donald Trump on Thursday, joining Democrats to pass a major security package that would provide additional military aid to Ukraine while imposing new sanctions on Russia.

The legislation passed the Republican-controlled House by a vote of 226-195, with the support of 18 Republicans and California Rep. Kevin Kiley, an independent who caucuses with the GOP. On the Democratic side, Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota was the only member of her party to vote against the measure.

The vote represents a direct challenge to the Trump administration, which opposed the legislation and now faces what could become a high-profile veto battle. Despite controlling the House, Republican leadership and the overwhelming majority of GOP lawmakers stood against the bill, reflecting continued support for President Trump’s position on the issue.

Supporters of the package argued that additional assistance is needed as Ukraine continues facing Russian missile and drone attacks in a conflict that has now entered its fifth year. However, many Republicans remained unconvinced, raising concerns about continued foreign spending while Americans expect Washington to focus on priorities closer to home. After all, Congress never seems to have trouble finding money when it’s headed overseas.

The vote once again exposed divisions in Washington over U.S. involvement in the Ukraine conflict, with most Republicans aligning with President Trump while a smaller group chose a different path.

As the legislation advances, attention now turns to the White House and the possibility of a veto fight. Regardless of the outcome, President Trump’s influence over the Republican Party remains evident, with the vast majority of GOP lawmakers standing firmly behind his position and continuing to prioritize an America First approach to foreign policy.
