In a shocking indictment of radical sanctuary policies, federal immigration enforcement officers in Los Angeles are being actively hunted and harassed, even followed to their homes, all while local police stand down and refuse to cooperate. This perilous reality was laid bare by ICE Los Angeles Field Office Director Thomas Giles in an exclusive interview, revealing the staggering risks his agents face daily in California's largest so-called "sanctuary city."
Giles, speaking during a high-stakes immigration enforcement operation in the early hours of Thursday, underscored a critical truth: while his dedicated teams will not be deterred, California's defiant sanctuary policies are actively endangering both law enforcement and the very communities they serve.
"The sanctuary policies definitely impact our operations in terms of it'd be a lot easier for us to have that transfer of custody in a secure environment," Giles explained. "So, what it does for us is it sends our officers out into the community, putting our officers at risk and other community members at risk to go out and try to apprehend this individual."
The operation resulted in the apprehension of six illegal immigrants. Among them were individuals with serious criminal pasts, including one convicted of assault with a baseball bat and another who had illegally re-entered the U.S. multiple times – stark examples of the dangers unleashed by reckless local policies.
Director Giles painted a grim picture of the operational shift. "Before we had all these sanctuary policies… we were picking up hundreds of people a day at the local jails and bringing them in and processing them." Now, local law enforcement "can't even work with us," a deliberate obstruction that, as Giles rightly states, "is definitely a big, huge public safety threat."
Consider the outrageous case of Julio Alberto Aroca-Rodriguez, a 20-year-old Honduran national. Local police arrested him just last week for assault with a deadly weapon using a baseball bat. Despite a standing removal order against him since 2019, local authorities brazenly ignored ICE's detainer request and released him back onto the streets. When ICE officers finally encountered Aroca-Rodriguez on Thursday, a crowd of anti-ICE agitators quickly formed, forcing officers to rapidly relocate after making additional collateral arrests.
The hostility doesn't end there. Director Giles detailed the "degrading" treatment his officers endure from many California politicians, a complicit media, and radical elements of the public.
"My officers have been followed home and been harassed, harassed on social media, harassed just personally, and they get in your face and everything else," he revealed. The brazen hypocrisy of anti-ICE agitators, who often wear masks while simultaneously complaining about officers doing the same, was also highlighted.
Yet, amidst this intentional obstruction and harassment, Giles praised his officers as true Americans who "love this country" and are committed to upholding the Constitution. "We're out doing our job; we are sworn law enforcement officers. We're out trying to keep the community safe just like other law enforcement officers," he affirmed.
On Thursday, Aroca-Rodriguez was finally processed and will remain in custody pending removal to Honduras. Five other illegal immigrants were also processed for removal proceedings.
This operation serves as a stark reminder: America First means upholding the rule of law and protecting those who enforce it, not cowering to dangerous sanctuary policies that actively undermine national security and public safety. It’s time for common sense to prevail over the radical agenda that has turned law enforcement into targets and communities into havens for criminals.
