This unprecedented surge of arrests, deemed one of the agency’s most successful to date by federal sources, targeted the very suburbs of Virginia and Maryland that have embraced dangerous sanctuary-type policies, effectively inviting the chaos now being witnessed.
The numbers tell a stark tale: 1,328 illegal immigrants taken off the streets between August 1-14. Nearly 400 of these individuals were not just present illegally but carried active criminal convictions or pending charges – a direct and undeniable threat to American communities that sanctuary policies brazenly ignore.
The roster of crimes uncovered is chilling: murder, rape, sexual assault, kidnapping, DUI, robbery, and attempted murder. Even more alarming, ICE officers apprehended documented members of vicious foreign terrorist organizations such as MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, alongside the notorious 18th Street Gang.
This decisive crackdown comes as these same sanctuary jurisdictions, notably Fairfax County, Virginia, have become hotbeds of illegal immigrant crime. A Department of Homeland Security report allegedly revealed that 75% of all murders in Fairfax County are committed by illegal aliens. The tragic link between open-border policies and plummeting public safety couldn't be clearer.
Speaking on the operation, aptly titled "Operation Safe Community — Washington, D.C.," Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin underscored the unwavering dedication of ICE officers. "The brave men and women of ICE are hard at work every single day getting these dangerous illegal aliens out of our country," Mullin stated, emphasizing the critical mission. He added, "Over the course of just two weeks in Virginia and Maryland, they arrested sexual assailants, kidnappers, drunk drivers, robbers, and gang members."
Mullin delivered a pointed and necessary message to the architects of reckless open-border policies: "While sanctuary politicians in Virginia and Maryland keep putting the needs of illegal aliens over the safety of the American people, the Trump Administration will always put American citizens first." Also in Alexandria, Angel Gabriel Ortiz-Hernandez from Guatemala was arrested, facing charges for rape of a mentally incapacitated victim and two counts of aggravated sexual battery of an incapacitated victim. These are the individuals that sanctuary policies protect, at the expense of innocent Americans.
Across the region, the story remained consistent. Harrisonburg, Virginia, saw the arrest of Honduran Estrella Reyes-Funez, whose criminal history includes a conviction for felony hit-and-run and arrests for making a threat to bomb or burn, assault and battery on a family member, and violating a protective order. Richmond yielded Eygner Wilfredo Huezo-Moran, a Salvadoran national who had an active warrant for murder and use of a firearm in its commission. Another Salvadoran national and MS-13 gang member, German Mejia-Baires, with a history of felony malicious wounding and convictions for driving while intoxicated, was arrested in Manassas.
DHS confirmed that all these individuals arrested will remain in ICE custody, facing immediate removal from the United States – a critical step towards restoring national sovereignty.
Patricia Hyde, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Acting Assistant Director, praised the tenacity and expertise of her teams: "Our officers are the best in the world at finding people who do not want to be located."
