Senator Durbin, the ranking member, used his fleeting time not to address the erosion of fairness in women's sports, but to dismiss the entire discussion. He pivoted to unrelated topics such as affordability, cell phone use among children, artificial intelligence, and government trust. Before his departure, Durbin declared his refusal to participate meaningfully, stating, "I will not ask questions, and I already did not call any witnesses." And just like that, he was gone, leaving behind a clear message: protecting women's sports is not a priority for the modern Democrat Party.

The mass exodus and dismissive attitude from Democrats are telling. When reached for comment by OutKick, only Senator Durbin's office offered a perfunctory response, pointing back to his opening statement. Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, encountered in person, claimed he missed the hearing due to a "classified briefing on the Iran war" – a convenient excuse that didn't stop him from dodging questions about his actual stance on protecting women's sports. "I'm not going to talk about it in the hallway here," Blumenthal stated, revealing a deep discomfort with the topic.

Durbin's only engagement with the issue was to raise unsubstantiated concerns for the LGBTQ community, citing a study on youth suicide risk and claiming that protective measures against biological males in women's sports would lead to a "vendetta" and "inappropriate gender verification checks" for cisgender girls. This familiar talking point, trotted out by Democrats last year, has been repeatedly debunked. Advocates for fair play, including Republican lawmakers, have consistently proposed non-invasive methods like cheek swab DNA testing to verify biological sex – a far cry from the alarming scenarios invented by the left.

The Democrats' stance is not only a betrayal of female athletes but also profoundly out of touch with the American public. Yet, the Democrat Party continues to prioritize a radical fringe ideology over common sense and public consensus.

This latest no-show is part of a desperate pattern as the 2026 midterms loom. Vulnerable Democrats are attempting to distance themselves from their past embrace of transgender athletes in women's sports, without actually reversing their position. Their tactic? Simply not showing up to the debate. This political cowardice, however, has not gone unnoticed by their Republican colleagues.

Senator Darline Graham of North Carolina sharply criticized the Democrat absence, stating, "I’m also disappointed our Democratic colleagues left the room, because I think the risk of physical harm is real and has already happened." Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana echoed the sentiment: "I’m a little disappointed that my Democratic colleagues left. It’s their right, but I’m disappointed."

Florida's Senator Ashley Moody delivered the most scathing rebuke, highlighting the glaring hypocrisy of the situation. "The reason why it is going now from one Republican senator to another Republican senator is because there’s not one Democratic senator here to ask those that are actually involved as females in female sports about the dangers and missed opportunities and challenges for what’s been happening across our nation for our young women and girls," Moody powerfully stated. I assume that was because he’s trying to justify why not one woman on the other side of the aisle showed up to ask these questions and engage."

States like California, Maine, and Minnesota have even actively fought against efforts to protect female athletes, including the America First executive order signed by President Donald Trump last February.
