EU Calls for ‘Restraint’ After U.S. Strikes on Iran, UK Warns Against Wider Regional War

European allies reacted cautiously Saturday after the United States launched military strikes against the Islamist regime in Iran, urging restraint and warning against escalation into a broader regional conflict.

In the early hours of Saturday, U.S. President Donald J. Trump announced that American forces had begun “major combat operations in Iran,” aimed at crippling Tehran’s missile production industry and preventing the regime from developing nuclear-capable delivery systems that could threaten the U.S. or Europe.

Trump also appealed directly to Iran’s military, police, and paramilitary forces to lay down their arms, offering “complete immunity” to those who surrender. Addressing the Iranian population, he urged them to seize what he called an opportunity to overthrow their rulers, declaring that “the hour of your freedom is at hand.”

European leaders, however, struck a more cautious tone.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the situation was “greatly concerning” and emphasized the need for de-escalation.

“We remain in close contact with our partners in the region. We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to safeguarding regional security and stability,” she said.
“Ensuring nuclear safety and preventing any actions that could further escalate tensions or undermine the global non-proliferation regime is of critical importance.”

Von der Leyen stressed that the European Union has imposed extensive sanctions on Iran and its Revolutionary Guards and continues to favor a negotiated solution to Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

“In close coordination with EU Member States, we will take all necessary steps to ensure that EU citizens in the region can count on our full support,” she said. “We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, to protect civilians, and to fully respect international law.”

She added that EU officials were in contact with Israel’s foreign minister and other regional leaders, while the bloc was also coordinating with Arab partners in search of diplomatic off-ramps. Non-essential EU personnel are being withdrawn from the region, and the EU’s Aspides naval mission has been placed on high alert in the Red Sea to help keep shipping lanes open.

The United Kingdom underscored that it did not participate in the strikes and warned against escalation into a broader conflict.

In a statement to London’s Daily Telegraph, Downing Street said:
“Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and that is why we have continually supported efforts to reach a negotiated solution.”

“Our immediate priority is the safety of UK nationals in the region and we will provide them with consular assistance, available 24/7,” the statement continued.

Britain also emphasized that it maintains defensive military capabilities in the Middle East as part of its commitments to allies, noting that those forces have recently been reinforced and stand ready to protect UK interests.

As fighting intensifies, Europe’s response highlights a widening gap in tone between Washington’s military approach and its allies’ push for de-escalation — even as all sides reiterate that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
