Hochul's Dangerous Betrayal: Taxpayer Cash Bribes Sheriffs to Shield Criminal Illegals from ICE

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, has unleashed a shocking betrayal of public trust, weaponizing taxpayer dollars to actively undermine law enforcement and shield criminal illegal aliens. In a move that prioritizes radical sanctuary policies over the safety of New York’s citizens, Hochul is dangling substantial technology upgrade grants before local police agencies—but with a sinister catch.

Earlier this week in Long Island, Governor Hochul brazenly announced that $75 million of a total $100 million in grants would be directly conditioned on compliance with the state's recently passed "Local Cops, Local Crimes Act." This legislation, pushed through by the Democrat-controlled state legislature in May, is designed to strong-arm sheriffs and police departments into severing all ties with federal immigration authorities, specifically by ending vital 287(g) agreements—voluntary partnerships that allow local law enforcement to assist ICE with raids and detentions.

In essence, Hochul is using the hard-earned money of New York taxpayers to bribe law enforcement, coercing them into acting as defacto accomplices in shielding criminal illegals. This comes at a time when American citizens across the nation are rightfully demanding robust border enforcement and a return to law and order, not its systematic dismantling.

Hochul, with a straight face, declared, "If you've not been a beneficiary before, please step up. You cannot imagine the difference that it will make in your community." She continued, "I'm committed to keeping this state as safe as possible, and we're going to continue our support for local law enforcement because they are literally on the front lines of protecting their communities." The irony is almost too much to bear. Her "commitment to safety" apparently extends only to those who flaunt our laws, while law-abiding New Yorkers are left to face the consequences.

The grant application forms, issued by the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, leave no room for ambiguity regarding Hochul’s insidious agenda. The eligibility rules are stark, outlining the exact demands being placed on local agencies.

An attestation form, which must be signed by a signatory within the law enforcement agency, explicitly states: "No application will be considered should the applicant be determined to be operating a 287(g) agreement, or similar agreements, with the federal government, which would support state and local resources being used for civil immigration enforcement purposes." It further clarifies: "Further, no data or information generated by technology or equipment procured with these funds shall be used for civil immigration enforcement purposes."

This blatant disregard for public safety has not gone unchallenged. Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney (NY-24) rightly slammed the policy, calling the banning of local law enforcement from partnering with ICE a "reckless policy." Tenney previously warned in a letter to Hochul that "This restriction ... is reckless, endangers New Yorkers, and further entrenches New York's status as a sanctuary state that prioritizes illegal immigrants over the safety of law-abiding citizens and the officers who protect them."

And there it is. The Democrat governor’s priority, chillingly, remains the same: illegal aliens over law-abiding citizens, every single time.

However, not all leaders are bowing to Hochul’s pressure tactics. Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin, an upstate Republican, has defiantly vowed not to comply with Hochul's dangerous efforts to ban cooperation with ICE. McLaughlin, a true America First leader, declared in an X post, "Let me absolutely guarantee this low IQ and dangerous [Governor Hochul] that [Rensselaer County] will once again ignore your stupidity just as we did with (former Governor Andrew) Cuomo constantly. While you endanger New Yorkers, I will protect my residents." He added, "We WILL continue to work with ICE, and we will continue to participate in the 287g program to protect our people."

McLaughlin rightly characterized the governor’s scheme as tantamount to "holding them (law enforcement) hostage."

Governor Hochul is not merely enacting policy; she is actively weaponizing taxpayer money to transform local law enforcement into unwitting participants in New York’s increasingly radical sanctuary state machine. The objective is clear: to allow criminal illegals to roam free, unmolested by the very authorities sworn to protect communities, while American citizens in the Empire State are forced to bear the cost—both financially and in terms of their safety.

The question remains: How much more will New Yorkers endure before they unequivocally reject this sacrificing of their safety and sovereignty at the altar of open-border ideology?
