In a stark display of the double standards often seen in Hollywood, Marvel star Mark Ruffalo, known for his on-screen heroics, is now facing a barrage of condemnation from three prominent Jewish organizations for what they describe as brazenly antisemitic comments.

Ruffalo's controversy ignited after he reportedly attacked Larry and David Ellison as "oligarchs" purportedly "complicit in Israel’s supposed 'genocide' in Gaza," while simultaneously decrying the proposed merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.

However, the tide turned when the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and the Creative Community for Peace (CCFP) forcefully backed Paramount's initial rebuttal to Ruffalo, lambasting the actor's inflammatory rhetoric.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center issued a powerful statement, declaring, "We commend (Paramount) for speaking clearly and refusing to allow prejudice to masquerade as political or corporate criticism." They further emphasized the critical need for moral clarity: "At a time when antisemitism is too often minimized, rationalized or repackaged in more socially acceptable language, this kind of moral clarity matters." The center didn't mince words, identifying Ruffalo's actions as a "textbook case of obsession and demonization," urging more leaders to "have the courage to call antisemitism what it is, regardless of who is spreading it."

Adding his influential voice, Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt excoriated Ruffalo's remarks. "The posts by Mark Ruffalo over the past 48 hours are cynical and sickening," Greenblatt stated. He advised, "Oppose the Paramount merger on the merits, find arguments grounded in facts and draw on what you know about the industry without engaging in antisemitic rhetoric." Greenblatt directly challenged Ruffalo's attempts to deflect criticism, calling his claims of Jewish friends a prime example of "gaslighting 101."

Greenblatt delivered a pointed warning to the actor: "Mark Ruffalo, your acting might be convincing on screen, but careless and hateful words like yours continue to put Jewish communities around the world at risk while antisemitic incidents are far too common."

In perhaps the most direct call for accountability, the Creative Community for Peace demanded a boycott of the actor. Ari Ingel, CCFP executive director, explained, "Mark Ruffalo’s rhetoric has increasingly crossed the line from criticism of Israel into extremist and antisemitic messaging."

Ingel meticulously detailed how Ruffalo’s claims about the merger "increasingly fuses hostility toward Israel and Zionism with Jewish-associated wealth, media ownership, oligarchic power and ominous warnings about concentrated control into a single narrative." The implications, Ingel stressed, are undeniable: "Those echoes are impossible to ignore. Hollywood should not accept this kind of rhetoric from anyone. Mark Ruffalo should retract these remarks and apologize, and nobody in Hollywood should platform him until he does."

Americans expect our public figures to uphold principles of decency and truth, not to traffic in dangerous antisemitic tropes.
