JD Vance delays Switzerland trip. WH cites logistical issues.

Vice President JD Vance has scrapped his planned travel to Switzerland on Friday for the next round of U.S.-Iran technical negotiations, the White House confirmed Thursday night, underscoring that the Trump administration is prioritizing substance and proper preparation over rushed diplomatic optics.

A White House spokesperson stated that plans for the upcoming technical talks have not yet been finalized, even as the U.S. delegation remains ready to depart at the first available opportunity.“

As the vice president said at his press conference, the plans for the upcoming technical talks have not been finalized, and the U.S. delegation has been prepared to depart at the first available opportunity,” the spokesperson said. “But the logistics of these negotiations have never been simple or predictable. As of now, the vice president is not departing tonight.”

The spokesperson added: “We will let you know as soon as we have a concrete update about next steps. We look forward to beginning technical talks as soon as possible.”

The delay comes shortly after President Trump and his Iranian counterpart signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at addressing Iran’s nuclear program. Negotiators had initially targeted a full deal within 60 days. The Trump-Vance team’s measured approach stands in contrast to the previous administration’s eagerness to accommodate Tehran.

With leverage clearly on America’s side following the degradation of Iran’s nuclear capabilities, the White House appears determined not to repeat the mistakes of rushed, empty talks. Officials are expected to provide further updates once logistics and timing are locked in.
