Killjoys: CA Coastal Commission Nixes Long Beach 4th of July Fireworks for Ludicrous Reasons

The California Coastal Commission denied a permit for a Fourth of July fireworks show in Long Beach, a port city located about 20 miles south of Los Angeles.

According to the report, the decision was based on concerns about potential water pollution and environmental impact. One of the reasons cited was that the event would require closing a parking lot near a waterfront restaurant, which would limit access to the coast.

The commission has suggested replacing the fireworks display with a drone show instead.

The decision has drawn criticism from those who argue that the environmental impact of fireworks is minimal compared to other ongoing issues such as urban runoff, fertilizers, industrial waste, and pollution from the Tijuana River that flows into U.S. waters.

Additionally, the timing of the decision has been questioned, as it comes during the year marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, a milestone typically associated with major celebrations.
