Another major Republican primary battle in Texas is officially in the books, and the America First movement just added another win to the scoreboard.
State Senator Mayes Middleton defeated Congressman Chip Roy on Tuesday in the Republican race for Texas attorney general, putting Middleton one step closer to taking over the office currently held by Ken Paxton. The Associated Press projected Middleton as the winner after a heated contest between two well-known conservative Republicans.
Middleton made President Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda central to his campaign from the beginning, and Texas Republican voters clearly responded. In a state where grassroots conservatives continue demanding fighters instead of polished establishment talking heads, Middleton managed to separate himself and secure the nomination victory.
Chip Roy, despite being considered one of the most conservative members of Congress, came up short in the race. Shortly after the results were announced, Roy conceded and said he personally called Middleton to congratulate him on the win — a rare moment of political class in an era where some politicians would rather blame the weather, voting machines, Mercury being in retrograde, or literally anything else.
The battle was closely watched across Texas because it represented more than just a contest for attorney general. It became another test of how powerful the MAGA movement remains inside the Republican Party, especially in one of the nation’s most important conservative strongholds.
With Middleton now advancing, Texas Republicans appear determined to keep the attorney general’s office firmly in the hands of a candidate aligned with Trump’s America First vision. And judging by the results, the grassroots base is still very much in control of the direction of the GOP in Texas.
For conservatives nationwide, the message from Texas voters was loud and clear: the MAGA movement isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
