A disturbing incident of antisemitic violence unfolded earlier this month in Belgrade, Maine, where a 36-year-old man allegedly fired multiple gunshots toward a Jewish summer camp. What's even more alarming? The alleged attacker, Nathan Hewett, was subsequently released on bail, with reports now detailing ongoing harassment by his family against camp employees.
The harrowing events took place on August 7 at Camp Modin. According to court documents and reports from the New York Post, Hewett, reportedly intoxicated, launched what authorities describe as an antisemitic attack, discharging several rounds from a rifle near the camp's basketball courts. Children as young as seven were present when the camp was forced into a terrifying lockdown.
In a testament to American common sense and protection of the innocent, security guards at Camp Modin sprang into action. They donned ballistic vests and armed themselves, prepared to defend the young campers against the threat. Court documents recount that following a confrontation, these guards heard the high-powered rifle shots being fired.
Despite the severity of the alleged assault, Hewett was arrested but later released on bail. The leniency shown by the justice system has seemingly emboldened his family, as Timothy Black, a camp security guard, detailed in a letter to the Capital Judicial Center. Black stated that Hewett's father engages in harassment “when he is intoxicated,” coming to the property line “screaming at us.” Adding to the absurdity, Hewett has since claimed his tractor was damaged after hitting something, inexplicably blaming the camp.
Authorities did, thankfully, take some decisive action, seizing at least 23 firearms from Hewett's property following the incident. He faces serious charges, including reckless conduct with a firearm, criminal threats with a dangerous weapon, terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, and discharging a firearm near a dwelling. Yet, the question remains: why was an individual facing such grave charges, especially those involving the targeting of children and allegations of hate, allowed back into the community where his family continues to intimidate victims?
