New Jersey is reeling from an escalating election integrity scandal, as a growing wave of revelations exposes thousands of noncitizens on state systems, igniting fears that the problem extends far beyond initial admissions. Republicans in the state legislature, long dismissed as "conspiracy theorists" for their warnings, are now demanding a full-scale, bipartisan investigation, asserting that the current Democrat-led probe is nothing more than a political whitewash.
State Sen. Kristin Corrado, the top Republican on New Jersey’s Judiciary Committee, revealed to Fox News Digital that she repeatedly alerted state officials to critical safeguards lacking in the automatic voter registration system. Her concerns, she says, were routinely brushed aside, exposing a glaring vulnerability that has now erupted into a statewide crisis.
"We didn't just reach out to the Motor Vehicle Commissioner. We reached out to secretary of state [at the time, Lt. Gov. Taheshia Way]. We were not satisfied with the answers that we got from the motor vehicle commissioner, which I can tell you were basically, ‘we have signs up, they're put on notice… that if you're not a citizen, you can't register to vote’," Corrado stated, exposing the shocking reliance on an "honor system" for a foundational pillar of American democracy.
This "honor system," Corrado argued, was entirely inadequate and proved catastrophic. Weeks after initial reports of noncitizens found on the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) rolls, a new bombshell dropped: roughly 75,000 noncitizens had been summoned for jury duty through state databases, dramatically broadening the scope of the potential compromise and confirming Republican fears that the MVC issue was merely the "tip of the iceberg."
Gov. Mikie Sherrill's administration has faced sharp criticism for what Republicans like Corrado and Senate Minority Leader Anthony Bucco describe as a narrowly focused internal review. Corrado expressed profound concerns that the governor’s "independent investigation is very limited in scope. It is limited to what they're calling the motor vehicle 'glitch'," deliberately ignoring the systemic failures that affect multiple state agencies.
Senate President Nicholas Scutari, a Democrat, has indicated his team would wait for Governor Sherrill’s internal probe to conclude before considering further action. His statement, while acknowledging the need for public trust, effectively sidesteps Republican calls for immediate, robust legislative oversight with subpoena power, which many argue is essential to uncover the true depth of the problem.
Former Gov. Phil Murphy’s spokesman, Mahen Gunaratna, claimed last week that Murphy had "no knowledge" of the issues at the MVC. "I find that hard to believe, but it's incredibly troubling that the governor did not know what his cabinet members were doing or what was going on right underneath him," Corrado countered, highlighting the astonishing lack of accountability.
State Joint Budget Committee ranking member Declan O’Scanlon, a Republican, echoed the sentiment of vindication: "The fact is that the people in charge for so long said this absolutely was impossible; Republicans were ‘conspiracy theorists’… only to find out that we were absolutely right; again."
O’Scanlon’s earlier warning that the motor-voter revelations were the "tip of the iceberg" was confirmed by the revelation of 75,000 noncitizens on jury rolls. "This has the potential to be a real scandal," he cautioned, emphasizing the critical need for subpoena-powered hearings, especially with pivotal elections looming. "We shouldn't dig this hole any deeper."
The state court system clarified that its jury system pulls from multiple lists, including MVC, taxation, and elections, and that noncitizens are legally permitted on taxation rolls. While prospective jurors are asked about citizenship and disqualified if not eligible, the core problem remains: how these individuals appeared on sensitive databases that feed into election-related processes in the first place.
In response to the unfolding crisis, Corrado and Bucco have introduced a bill to eliminate automatic motor-voter registration and implement common-sense voter ID requirements along with regular audits of election data systems. "New Jerseyans need more than just excuses and finger pointing, they deserve action, and there are commonsense steps we can take right now," Bucco declared. "Get the MVC out of the voter registration business."
State Sen. Joe Pennacchio, who has called for scrutiny from the Attorney General, stressed that the 75,000 figure is a "red-flag that Trenton can’t police itself." Pennacchio blasted Gov. Sherrill for blaming a software firm, the previous administration, and even President Donald Trump for the "ever-increasing numbers," labeling her investigatory efforts a "whitewash."
"The disclosure that 75,000 noncitizens were summoned as potential members of juries screams for a thorough federal investigation," Pennacchio asserted, concluding that "with the refusal of the Democratic Legislature to investigate, it is obvious the U.S. Attorney General's office must take charge." The integrity of American elections demands accountability, not political obstruction, ensuring that the sacred right to vote is preserved for citizens alone, and public trust is restored.
