Pittsburgh Police Under Fire After Failing to Assist ICE Agents During Struggle

In a scene that raises serious questions about priorities in law enforcement, Pittsburgh police officers reportedly stood by while Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents struggled to detain a suspect right outside a police station. Yes—outside a police station.

According to statements from Police Chief Jason Lando, there was no confirmed order telling officers to stand down, despite claims circulating that such instructions may have been given. Instead, Lando has launched an administrative review to figure out exactly what happened during the incident near the Zone 3 station.

Lando acknowledged that officers did not intervene as ICE agents attempted to take the suspect into custody. However, he emphasized that Pittsburgh police do not enforce federal immigration law and are not involved in ICE operations. In fact, he made it very clear: the department does not collaborate with ICE, does not check immigration status, and does not participate in what he described as “roundups.”

That said, even Lando admitted that officers are still expected to respond to emergency calls for assistance—including from other law enforcement agencies. Their role, at minimum, is to help secure the scene before returning to regular duty. Which, naturally, raises the obvious question: if agents are struggling with a suspect right in front of you… does that count as a situation needing assistance? Apparently, that’s what the review will sort out.

Adding to the situation, Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor has reaffirmed that the city will continue its policy of not assisting ICE operations. Because when federal agents are dealing with enforcement issues, the last thing they need is… local support? Interesting approach.

The internal review ordered by Lando aims to clarify the full circumstances surrounding the incident, and whether proper procedures were followed. For now, what’s clear is that the situation has sparked concern about coordination between local and federal authorities.

At the end of the day, Americans expect law enforcement agencies to work together when safety is on the line. Hopefully, this review leads to clearer policies and stronger cooperation—because ensuring public safety should never be optional.
